Telangana Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy said the State government was preparing measures to prevent electricity shortages during El Nino conditions. He said Telangana could buy power from other States at ₹12 per unit if needed, while also expanding solar and wind projects to meet rising demand.

Telangana is preparing measures to prevent electricity shortages amid El Nino conditions, Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy said on Saturday. Reddy said the government was prepared to purchase electricity from other States at ₹12 per unit if necessary. He also said officials were focusing on solar and wind-energy projects to expand renewable generation and meet the State’s growing demand.

The minister said the government had maintained drinking-water and irrigation supplies despite the prevailing El Nino conditions. Recent rainfall caused by a cyclone had provided some relief, he added. According to Reddy, the State Cabinet’s recent meeting had primarily considered steps to avoid power shortages.

His comments came as the government reviewed energy options alongside its wider response to weather-related pressures. Reddy also highlighted welfare initiatives of the Congress government, including the supply of fine rice, free electricity of up to 200 units for eligible households, farmers’ welfare programmes and the Indiramma housing scheme. He criticised the previous Bharat Rashtra Samithi government, describing it as having pursued “feudal rule”, and said the Congress administration was providing pro-poor governance.

Those remarks were political claims and were not accompanied in the source material by a response from the BRS. The minister distributed Kalyanalaxmi and Shadimubarak cheques to beneficiaries in Nelakondapalli mandal and laid the foundation stone for a bitumen road at Kattukacharam. He later visited Narayanapuram village in Sathupalli mandal to inspect the site of a cancer hospital being established by the Sri Shirdi Sai Jana Mangalam Trust.

He also took part in a cancer screening and awareness programme. Sathupalli MLA Matta Ragamayee and Khammam Collector Divakara T.S. were among those present.

The source material did not specify the amount of electricity Telangana might need to purchase or the timeline for the planned solar and wind projects.
