Twenty people were killed in a multiple-vehicle crash along the Hawan Kibo-Jos route in Nigeria’s Plateau State, the Federal Road Safety Corps said on Friday. The crash occurred at about 3:32 p.m. after Sopp Water Falls, according to Osondu Ohaeri, the corps’ public education officer.
He said 25 people were involved, including 23 males and two females. Five people, comprising three males and two females, were injured, while 20 males died. Four vehicles were involved: a Howo Sino truck, a Toyota Corolla, a Toyota Bummer bus operated by Yankari Express and a motorcycle whose registration details were unavailable, the FRSC said.
The agency identified brake failure and loss of control as likely causes. Its crash investigation team was directed to conduct a thorough inquiry into the circumstances, including the reported mechanical failure. The injured victims were taken to Ryom General Hospital and Vom Christian Hospital.
The bodies of those who died were deposited at the mortuary of Jos University Teaching Hospital, according to the FRSC. Rescue personnel cleared debris and restored the affected section of the highway to traffic. The agency did not provide further details about the identities of the victims or the condition of those injured.
FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed expressed sadness over the deaths and offered condolences to the families, friends and associates of the victims. He also wished the injured a speedy recovery. Mohammed urged motorists, particularly commercial and heavy-duty vehicle operators, to maintain their vehicles, observe roadworthiness requirements, manage speed and drive responsibly.
He said the scale of the crash should remind road users that each death affects a family and community.
