Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume has led political leaders and stakeholders from Nigeria’s North-Central region in launching a movement to support President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima in the 2027 election. The North-Central Grassroots Mobilisation Movement for Tinubu/Shettima 2027 was launched at an inaugural meeting at Mr Akume’s office in Abuja, according to a statement issued by the movement’s national coordinator, Sonny Echono. Mr Akume said the organisation’s main purpose was to build support for the President and encourage a large turnout across the region.
He also said the North-Central was aiming to produce the highest regional vote total for Mr Tinubu in the election. Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule described the initiative as timely. He said the region was politically stronger than it had been before the 2023 election, pointing to the presence of the SGF, the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress and other senior political appointees from the region.
Mr Sule expressed confidence that the North-Central would perform strongly for Mr Tinubu and other APC candidates in 2027. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, called the movement the first of its kind and said the necessary structures would be provided to support its activities ahead of the general election. Mr Echono said the platform would coordinate political leaders and grassroots stakeholders across the six North-Central states.
He said the focus had shifted from whether Mr Tinubu would win the region to how it could deliver the largest number of votes to him.
