Ekiti North SDP candidate sets out reform agenda for 2027 Senate race

Peter Obafemi, the Social Democratic Party’s candidate for Ekiti North Senatorial District, says he will seek constitutional and fiscal reforms, rural infrastructure and youth enterprise initiatives if elected in 2027. The former governorship candidate is asking voters across five local government areas to support his bid for the Senate.
Peter Obafemi, the Social Democratic Party candidate for Ekiti North Senatorial District, has said his 2027 Senate campaign will focus on reforms aimed at improving representation and supporting national development. Obafemi, who contested the 2026 governorship election on the SDP platform, said his decision to seek a Senate seat reflected his continuing interest in public service despite the outcome of that election. He made the remarks in a statement issued in Ado Ekiti on Friday.
The businessman and aviation professional described the Senate as a constitutional platform for addressing structural issues affecting communities. He said he would advocate constitutional recognition for traditional institutions, arguing that this could strengthen the role of traditional rulers in peace-building and grassroots security. His proposed legislative agenda includes devolution of powers, closer oversight of public finances, rural infrastructure, youth enterprise and a greater role for traditional institutions.
Obafemi said he would support constitutional amendments to decentralise authority and fiscal resources to sub-national and local governments. He also pledged to pursue legislation and federal intervention projects for rural roads, agro-processing facilities and improved access to capital for farmers and traders. For young people, he proposed federal programmes focused on vocational training, technology adoption and enterprise financing.
Ekiti North comprises Ikole, Oye, Ido-Osi, Moba and Ilejemeje local government areas. Obafemi urged SDP members and voters in the district to support the party, saying its voice should be represented with dignity and authority in Abuja. He said more than three decades of work in international business, aviation and public advisory roles had informed his understanding of the economic and social needs of the district.
