US and UK firms continue investing in Hong Kong, minister says

Hong Kong’s commerce minister says overseas companies continue to establish or expand operations in the city despite geopolitical instability. InvestHK helped 516 companies set up or expand during the first eight months of 2026, including 27 US firms and 21 British firms.
Companies from the United States, Britain and Singapore remain among the leading sources of new overseas investment in Hong Kong, according to Commerce and Economic Development Secretary Algernon Yau Ying-wah. Yau said InvestHK helped 516 overseas and mainland Chinese companies establish or expand in the city during the first eight months of 2026. Mainland companies accounted for 307 of them, followed by Singapore with 29, the US with 27 and the UK with 21.
He said the figures demonstrated continued business confidence despite geopolitical instability. Yau argued that companies remained focused on opportunities, including access to the Greater Bay Area, a regional economic hub linking Hong Kong, Macau and cities in Guangdong. Hong Kong had 11,070 companies with mainland or overseas parent companies last year, an 11 per cent increase.
Mainland firms accounted for about 28 per cent, while US and Japanese companies each represented about 14 per cent. InvestHK has a target of helping at least 1,200 enterprises establish or expand operations across 2026 and 2027, with projected capital inflows of HK$120bn and 12,000 jobs. Yau said the agency was on course to meet its 2026 target.
