Usor targets bigger Nigeria role after winning debut goal

Moses Usor says he is ready to meet increased expectations after scoring the winning goal on his Nigeria debut against Madagascar. The LASK forward came off the bench last Friday and needed 14 minutes to produce the decisive moment in Nigeria’s 2-1 comeback victory in Uyo. The result gave the Super Eagles a winning start to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

Usor’s individual effort completed the comeback after Madagascar had taken the lead through Ehsan Kari. George Ilenikhena later equalised before Usor settled the match, according to Punch Nigeria. The 24-year-old said his first appearance for Nigeria was a significant personal moment, particularly because members of his family were present.

He had previously been invited to the squad for the 2026 Unity Cup but could not take part because of injury. “I am still surprised. This is a dream because playing at this level, I think, is a big dream,” Usor said.

He added that sharing a camp with players he had admired had been a different experience and promised to contribute to the team’s attack. Usor also acknowledged that his debut had changed the expectations surrounding him. He said he knew Nigerians would now want more after his match-winning contribution.

His next opportunity comes against Guinea-Bissau in the second Group L qualifier on Tuesday. The forward will hope his impact from the substitutes’ bench is enough to earn him a starting position as coach Eric Chelle considers his attacking options. Nigeria’s victory over Madagascar has given the team early momentum, while Usor’s introduction has added competition in attack.

The Guinea-Bissau match will offer him another chance to build on his first appearance and establish himself within Chelle’s squad.
