The Swachh Andhra Corporation will hold the second edition of its Swachhathon marathon in the Vijayawada-Amaravati region on October 2 to mark Gandhi Jayanti and Swachh Diwas. Corporation chairman Kommareddy Pattabhiram announced the event at a press conference in Vijayawada on Tuesday. He said the marathon was being organised under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and the Swarna Andhra–Swachh Andhra campaign.
Organisers expect nearly 10,000 people to participate this year. Pattabhiram said the first edition attracted approximately 6,000 to 7,000 runners. The event will offer 5K, 10K and 21K categories, with cash prizes totalling ₹10 lakh for the winners.
The run will begin at 5 a.m. from the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Stadium. Information Technology and Human Resources Development Minister Nara Lokesh is expected to flag it off.
Other ministers, members of Parliament, legislators, public representatives and personalities from the film and sports sectors are also expected to attend. The route will pass the Police Control Room, Vinayaka temple, Seethamma Vari Padalu, Krishna Barrage and Steel Bridge before reaching the Manthena Satyanarayana Raju Ashram in the Amaravati capital region. Runners will then return to Vijayawada.
Drummers, cultural performances and zumba sessions are planned along the route to entertain and encourage participants. Registration is mandatory for the event, although people who have not registered may join the 5K run, according to the organisers. The corporation’s announcement did not provide details of road closures, traffic diversions or the distribution of prize money among the categories.
The event is intended to connect a public running programme with the state’s cleanliness and hygiene campaigns.
