Wike pledges resignation if Tinubu loses FCT and Rivers in 2027

Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has pledged to resign from office if President Bola Tinubu loses the 2027 presidential election in Rivers State and the FCT. Wike made the declaration in Abuja on Wednesday during a meeting with Apo mechanics and traders over their planned relocation to the informal sector in Wasa by the end of the year. He said his continued presence in the cabinet would depend on delivering victory for Tinubu in the two territories.

Wike, a former Rivers governor, said he would announce his resignation on January 17, 2027, if the president lost in both locations. The minister said the FCT was where he worked, while Rivers was his home state. Losing either, he argued, would indicate that he had failed in his responsibilities and would make him unfit to remain in his position.

Wike used the meeting to rally the mechanics and traders behind his cross-party Rainbow Coalition. He called on members of the Peoples Democratic Party and other parties, as well as FCT residents, to unite behind Tinubu for the presidency and Philip Aduda for the Senate. He also urged the Apo community’s leadership to mobilise residents, relatives and non-indigenes connected to the business area to vote.

Wike assured the mechanics and traders that their relocation to Wasa would take place by the end of the year. Community leaders praised infrastructure work in the area, including the dualisation of Apo Road. Apo Trade Association chairman Chimezie Efe said the road had brought customers closer and improved business, while pledging members’ votes to the All Progressives Congress.

Chinedu Nweke of the Apo Mechanics and Traders Unity Forum also praised Wike’s visits and the reported progress on the road and relocation plans.
