Xi leaves Washington after summit with Trump without major breakthrough

Chinese President Xi Jinping has left Washington after a three-day state visit that produced optimistic statements from both sides but no major breakthrough on key US-China disputes. Xi and US President Donald Trump held talks at the White House and later visited the National Archives with their spouses. Xi also attended a state dinner with Trump and senior figures from the technology and banking sectors.

Trump said the meeting had been marked by friendship and success and announced plans to meet Xi again in China in November and at the G20 summit in Florida in December. Xi identified the APEC meeting in China and the G20 summit as further opportunities for talks. Xi said the relationship should be based on strategic stability, respect, fairness and reciprocity.

Trump said the countries had made significant progress, but DW’s analysis found little movement on major issues including trade tensions and artificial-intelligence regulation. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Washington expected to release more details of recent negotiations. He said the discussions included exemptions for some key goods, US exports of agricultural products and medical devices, and imports of non-sensitive consumer goods from China.

The talks did not cover a small amount of high-quality US-made chips requiring licences, Greer said. The two countries have previously imposed steep tariffs and later agreed to temporary suspensions. Trump also said he discussed the Iran war with Xi and expressed optimism about the Strait of Hormuz.

A few hundred protesters gathered near the White House during the visit. Xi and his wife departed from Joint Base Andrews after the National Archives visit.
