A Buddhist awareness rally is scheduled to take place in Yadgir on October 5 ahead of a major Dhamma Deeksha ceremony planned for November 1 in Sannati, Karnataka. Organisers said the rally will discuss B.R. Ambedkar’s conversion to Buddhism and promote participation in the larger event.
A Karnataka-wide Buddhist awareness rally will be held in Yadgir on Monday, October 5, ahead of a Dhamma Deeksha ceremony planned for November 1 at historic Sannati in Kalaburagi district. Dalit Sangharsha Samiti district convener Mareppa Chatterkar announced the programme at a press conference in Yadgir on Saturday. He said the rally would promote awareness of Buddhism and the significance of Dr B.R.
Ambedkar’s conversion to the faith. The procession will begin at Mailapur Base at 7pm and pass through Chakrakatta, Gandhi Chowk and Kanakanagar before ending at Ambedkar Nagar. A public meeting will then be held at Ambedkar Chowk.
Zen monk Dr Shaku Bodhidhamma is scheduled to attend the gathering. Chatterkar said the rally was being organised in support of the vision of a “Prabuddha Bharat”, or enlightened India, associated with Ambedkar. The larger Dhamma Deeksha ceremony is due to take place at Sannati, also known as Kanaganahalli, in Chittapur taluk on November 1.
Chatterkar said about five lakh devotees, including male and female followers, were expected to attend. He appealed to Ambedkarites, Buddhists, Bhikkhu Sanghas, social and political leaders and Bahujan organisations to participate in the rally and the forthcoming event. The press conference was attended by several social and political figures, including Urban Development Authority Chairman Baburao Kadloor.
