Amazon reports strong early response to quick-delivery service in Visakhapatnam
Amazon says its Amazon Now quick-delivery service is receiving six to seven times as many orders in Visakhapatnam as its earlier Fresh operation. The service uses nine More Retail stores in the city, and the company said it had crossed $1bn in annualised gross sales in India while expanding towards 100 cities.
Amazon has reported a strong early response to its Amazon Now quick-delivery service in Visakhapatnam, where orders are six to seven times higher than those recorded by its earlier Amazon Fresh operation. Srikant Sree Ram, Amazon India’s director for everyday essentials, gave the figures during a media interaction in the city on Wednesday. Amazon Now began operating in Visakhapatnam a few weeks ago, fulfilling orders through nine More Retail Limited stores.
Sree Ram said 40 per cent of customers returned to purchase within four to six weeks. He said Amazon Now had crossed $1bn in annualised gross sales in India, with orders doubling every quarter since the service was launched in early 2025. The company plans to take the service to 100 Indian cities by Diwali.
In Andhra Pradesh, it is available in 20 cities, including Guntur, Nellore, Tirupati, Kurnool, Kadapa, Anantapur, Vijayawada and Rajahmundry. Sree Ram said about 40 per cent of products in each order were non-grocery items. He also reported growing demand for products described as healthier or carrying clean labels.
Sales of dry fruits and nuts were 60 per cent above normal levels, while almond orders had nearly tripled. Orders peaked at about 9 p.m., according to the company. Prime members pay no delivery charge on orders above ₹99, while other customers qualify for free delivery above ₹149.
Sree Ram said the service charged neither a convenience fee nor a surge fee. Amazon said it worked with more than 18,000 farmers across India through its fruit and vegetable supply chain, including collection centres in Andhra Pradesh. More than 25,000 sellers from the State sell through Amazon, which has over two million sellers nationally.
The company’s Great Indian Festival sale begins on October 8 and will be open to all customers from the first day. SBI cardholders will receive a 10 per cent instant discount, and Amazon Now products will be included in the sale. The figures and expansion plans were provided by Amazon representatives; the supplied material did not include independent sales data or comments from competitors.
