Police in Nigeria’s Delta State say they rescued a 25-year-old woman allegedly assaulted and held hostage, while arresting five people in separate investigations involving suspected cult activity and an alleged kidnapping plot. Officers also recovered firearms, ammunition and bladed weapons, according to the police spokesperson.

Police in Nigeria’s Delta State say they have rescued a kidnapped woman and arrested five suspects in separate operations across the state. The operations also produced a fabricated Beretta pistol, a magazine, two rounds of live ammunition, a battle axe, four cutlasses and a hammer, police said. Bright Edafe, the state police spokesperson, disclosed the arrests in a statement sent to PREMIUM TIMES on Sunday.

He said officers from the Otu-Jeremi Division rescued a 25-year-old woman who was allegedly assaulted and held hostage in Usiefrun Community. The rescue took place on Saturday after intelligence was shared by the Divisional Police Officer of the Ovwian-Aladja Division, according to the statement. Police arrested a 29-year-old man, Brotugbare Onome, in connection with the incident.

A search of the premises where the woman was found led to the recovery of the improvised firearm, magazine and ammunition, police said. The source material does not state whether the suspect has been charged or provide details of the woman’s condition. In a separate case, officers from the Violent Crime Response Unit arrested Ezekiel Izomor and Emmanuel Ogaganefe, both 23, over the alleged killing of a 25-year-old man identified as Godfrey.

Police said the killing occurred at Jesse Main Market in Ethiope West Local Government Area on 24 March. The arrests followed intelligence from a viral video that allegedly showed suspected cultists celebrating the killing. PREMIUM TIMES said it had not seen the video.

Police said a raid on a suspected hideout in Oghara on 1 October led to the arrests and recovery of the bladed weapons. Police alleged that a suspect named Collins wanted to lead the Aro Bagger confraternity and believed killing a rival could help him. Collins and another suspect, Richman, remain at large, police said.

In a third case, Endurance Akpade and Edwin Morgan were arrested over an alleged plan to kidnap a woman in Abraka. The commissioner urged residents to provide information and warned youths against cultism.
