Engineering students advised to match career choices with changing skills needs
Students at a Vijayawada seminar were encouraged to make independent career decisions and keep updating their skills. Speakers outlined employment, higher education and entrepreneurship as three broad options after engineering, while highlighting programming, artificial intelligence, communication, teamwork and practical project experience as valuable capabilities.
Engineering students should make informed career decisions and continuously update their skills, speakers told a seminar on careers in management, sciences and technology in Vijayawada. The Hindu Future India Club organised the event on Wednesday with Paari School of Business and SRM University-A.P., in collaboration with PVP Siddhartha Institute of Technology. The programme was attended by final-year engineering students at the institute.
V.M. Manikandan, an associate professor at SRM University-A.P., said students had three broad choices after completing a B.Tech: employment, higher studies or entrepreneurship. While parents, teachers and friends could offer guidance, he said students should make the final decision about their careers.
Manikandan outlined opportunities in IT services, product companies, start-ups and global capability centres. He said recruiters sought programming and problem-solving abilities, communication, knowledge of cloud technologies and artificial intelligence, teamwork and practical project experience. He also explained recruitment stages such as aptitude tests, coding rounds, technical interviews and human-resources interviews.
He discussed public-sector options including public-sector undertakings, ISRO, DRDO, civil services, banking and state government departments. He highlighted the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering as relevant to public-sector recruitment and postgraduate programmes, and referred students to M.Tech, M.S., MBA and direct Ph.D. routes, along with scholarships, fellowships and research opportunities.
On entrepreneurship, Manikandan said students should identify real-world problems, develop suitable capabilities and explore opportunities while still in college. He also shared his progression from diploma studies to heading a computer science department and encouraged students to remain focused on professional development. Institute principal K.
