Nigeria has launched a National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System that assigns an 11-character code to every addressable building. Communications Minister Bosun Tijani urged residents to find and share their codes, saying the system could improve deliveries, emergency response, public services and access to commercial opportunities.

The Federal Government has launched a national digital postcode system that assigns a unique 11-character code to every addressable building in Nigeria. Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Minister Bosun Tijani announced the launch on Thursday and urged Nigerians to search for their codes through the official website, postcode.gov.ng. The system is operated by the Nigerian Postal Service.

According to Tijani, the codes are designed to provide a precise, geographic-information-system-enabled reference for locations. They identify addresses through five levels: state, local government area, district, area and building. The minister said the system would make it easier to identify locations and connect people and businesses with services and opportunities.

He said businesses could use the codes to reach customers beyond their immediate neighbourhoods, while families could provide more accurate locations during emergencies. Tijani also said the postcodes could help government agencies deliver essential services to communities. The Nigerian Postal Service had previously identified deliveries, emergency response, public-service delivery and e-commerce as areas that could benefit from a standard location reference.

“Every Nigerian deserves to be found. Every business deserves the chance to reach its customers. And every community deserves to be within reach of opportunity,” Tijani said.

He linked the system to President Bola Tinubu’s ambition of building a $1 trillion economy, arguing that accurate location information was part of the infrastructure required for wider participation in trade and economic activity. The minister encouraged residents to find their codes and share them with family members, friends and businesses. The government’s announcement did not provide details on any mandatory use of the codes, but presented the system as a national digital foundation for location-based services.
