A former security camp in Bhatpal, in Chhattisgarh’s Narayanpur district, has been converted into residential facilities for more than 150 tribal schoolboys. The district administration said the hostel provides accommodation near Education City, Kutul, and represents a shift in the use of infrastructure from security operations to education and social development.

A former security camp in Bhatpal, a remote area of Chhattisgarh’s Narayanpur district, has been converted into hostel facilities for tribal schoolboys. The campus, which housed security personnel for more than 15 years, is now serving students from difficult-to-access areas. Narayanpur Collector Namrata Jain said the initiative was the first of its kind in the Bastar division.

She described the conversion as a shift from security-oriented infrastructure to facilities focused on education and the future of local children. The residential facility began operating on August 11. It has separate sections for pre-matriculation and post-matriculation Scheduled Tribes boys.

The pre-matriculation hostel, intended for students in Classes 6 to 10, has a sanctioned capacity of 100 but currently accommodates 114 students. The post-matriculation hostel serves students in Classes 11 and 12. It has space for 50 students and currently houses 39.

The facilities meet the residential needs of students attending Education City in Kutul. Komendra, a Class 12 student from Rajbeda, told the district administration that the post-matriculation hostel had reduced the financial pressure he previously faced while staying outside the school premises. The new facility also provides accommodation close to his school.

Jain said the project addressed the need for safe and affordable housing for students from distant communities. She said children in the region had faced difficulties linked to distance, connectivity and access to services. The Collector said the conversion reflected changing development priorities in areas that had historically experienced security challenges.

According to her, existing infrastructure was increasingly being used to support education, social development and opportunities for local communities. The hostel’s current occupancy exceeds the sanctioned capacity of the pre-matriculation section, while the post-matriculation section has places available according to the figures provided by the district administration. The supplied material does not give details of the project’s cost or the future expansion of the facilities.
