Governor calls on VTU graduates to turn innovation into enterprises

Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot has urged engineering graduates to become job creators and use their education to develop solutions to challenges facing society. Addressing the 26th annual convocation of Visvesvaraya Technological University at its Jnana Sangama campus in Belagavi on Saturday, Mr. Gehlot said students should set ambitious goals, work consistently and contribute to nation-building.
He is also the Chancellor of the university. The Governor advised graduates to remain humble after success, be patient during difficulties and continue trying after failure. He said their transition from university would bring both opportunities and challenges.
Mr. Gehlot placed particular emphasis on research and innovation. He said universities should not limit their work to producing research publications, but should develop solutions with a demonstrable effect on people’s lives.
He identified water conservation, clean energy, sustainable agriculture, rural technology, healthcare, smart mobility, cybersecurity, climate change and the circular economy as areas requiring research. He also asked students to convert Karnataka’s technology ecosystem into entrepreneurship and employment generation. The Governor referred to Bengaluru’s role as a major technology centre and said a student-led start-up that created employment would contribute beyond individual success by strengthening the national economy.
He also called for traditional Indian knowledge in engineering and science to be combined with modern technology. During the convocation, honorary Doctor of Science degrees were conferred on Sabitha Ramamurthy, M.P. Shyam and T.G.
Sitharam. Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara, Minister Basavaraj Rayareddi, university officials, faculty members, graduating students and their parents attended the event.
Mr. Gehlot invoked the legacy of Sir M. Visvesvaraya, whose name the university bears, and cited the examples of A.P.J.
Abdul Kalam, Swami Vivekananda and B.R. Ambedkar in urging graduates to pursue knowledge, innovation and public service.
