India finished fourth at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games with 21 gold medals and 85 medals overall, after a late surge that included men’s hockey gold, while the closing ceremony in Nagoya marked the handover to Qatar for 2030.

The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games closed in Nagoya with India finishing fourth in the medal standings after collecting 21 gold medals and 85 medals overall, according to India Today. India’s campaign ended with a gold medal in men’s hockey, secured by a 5-1 victory over Malaysia in Saturday’s final. The result helped lift the country into the top five after it had been outside the top 10 as recently as Thursday.

The late surge produced 11 additional gold medals, with hockey and cricket contributing titles while archery, boxing and wrestling added to the overall haul. India’s final total was below its performance at the 2022 Hangzhou Games, where it won 106 medals, including 28 golds. The Aichi-Nagoya campaign therefore ended with 21 fewer medals overall and seven fewer golds.

Shooter Neeru Dhanda led India’s contingent as women’s flag-bearer at the closing ceremony. She had won two gold medals and a silver during the Games, including gold in the mixed trap team event with Kynan Chenai. The ceremony was attended by Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, along with Olympic Council of Asia president Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani.

Qatar, host of the 2030 Asian Games, was due to receive the handover. The event brought 16 days of competition in Japan to a close. The ceremony was held at the Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium in Nagoya, with athletes from 45 nations expected to take part.
