Kerala police have ordered an inquiry into an alleged threat made by Cantonment Sub-Inspector Gokul to SFI Thiruvananthapuram district secretary Nandan. The order followed the circulation of an audio clip, while tensions between the CPI(M)-linked student organisation and police remain high after a university hostel confrontation.

Kerala police have ordered an inquiry into an alleged phone threat by Cantonment Sub-Inspector Gokul to SFI Thiruvananthapuram district secretary Nandan, amid continuing tensions between the student organisation and police. The inquiry was reportedly ordered by Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) P. Vijayan after an audio clip of a purported conversation between the two men surfaced on Saturday.

The ADGP directed the City Police Commissioner to conduct an inquiry and submit a report, and also sought an explanation from the sub-inspector. Mr. Nandan alleged that Mr.

Gokul called him on Saturday morning and threatened to arrest him from the CPI(M) party office if the SFI went ahead with a proposed march to the officer’s residence. The SFI released an audio clip in which a voice purportedly belonging to Mr. Gokul is heard saying that he would come to the party office and book Mr.

Nandan if the march proceeded. The material does not state whether the sub-inspector has confirmed that the voice is his or provided an explanation. Mr.

Nandan also alleged that police attacked students without provocation during a clash at the University Men’s Hostel on Wednesday night. SFI leaders subsequently met Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala and the Director General of Police, seeking safety assurances and disciplinary action against Mr. Gokul and other personnel.

The SFI announced a march to the sub-inspector’s residence. The latest allegation followed remarks by CPI(M) Thiruvananthapuram district secretary and MLA V. Joy against Mr.

Gokul during a party march to the Secretariat.
