Traditional rulers from other kingdoms were also present, including the Igwe of Onitsha, King Nnaemeka Obi, and the Olu of Warri. King Charles Douglas Jaja succeeds the late King Dandeson Douglas Jaja, who died last year and was buried in April 2026.
The new monarch was elected in December 2025 after the former occupant of the throne died. The late king had also served as chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers. Charles Douglas Jaja is the sixth Amanyanabo of Opobo Kingdom, according to the report.
The coronation followed preparations announced by the Opobo Council of Chiefs. Its vice-chairman, Princewill Dappa, said at a news conference in Port Harcourt that activities had been planned ahead of the ceremony. Dappa said the programme was designed to culminate in the grand coronation in Opobo Town, in Opobo Local Government Area, on September 26, 2026.
