Karnataka minister orders removal of eucalyptus and acacia from forest sites

Karnataka Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister Ramalinga Reddy has ordered officials to remove large numbers of eucalyptus and acacia trees from three research and forest sites around Bengaluru. Reddy issued the instruction during an inspection of the Kalkere Research Centre, Doresanipalya Forest Research Station and Turahalli Minor Forest on Monday. He said the trees hindered the growth of native species and other trees important to the environment.

The minister directed officials to study the Union government’s Urban Forest Scheme and plant a variety of local species that would contribute to the local climate and ecosystem. The 30-acre Kalkere Research Centre contains 4,722 trees representing 126 varieties. Many of the trees have permanent plaques providing information for visitors and researchers.

Reddy also instructed officials to install toilets and drinking-water facilities there. At the 38-acre Turahalli Mini Forest, he asked officials to prepare a Detailed Project Report for a new 35-acre arboretum. He also called for basic facilities to be installed so that more people could visit and learn about forests.

Reddy further instructed officials to take steps to build small lakes and check dams. The projects are intended to conserve water during the rainy season for animals and birds. The minister’s directions were issued during an inspection of sites in and around Bengaluru.
