Khaja Bandanawaz University in Kalaburagi marked International Microorganisms Day with an expert lecture and student model exhibition. Speaker Dayanand Agsar discussed applications ranging from medicine and biofertilisers to wastewater treatment and biofuels, while biotechnology students presented projects on microbial technologies.

Khaja Bandanawaz University in Kalaburagi observed International Microorganisms Day with an expert lecture and a student model exhibition focused on the practical uses of microorganisms. The programme was organised by the Department of Biotechnology in the university’s Faculty of Science. It aimed to introduce students to the role of microorganisms in human health, food, agriculture, biotechnology and environmental sustainability.

Dayanand Agsar, chief executive officer of Ecoink Organics and former vice-chancellor of Gulbarga University, was the chief guest. Drawing on his research experience in actinobacteria, he discussed the potential uses of microorganisms in medicine, biofertilisers, bioremediation, wastewater treatment and biofuels. Mr.

Agsar said microorganisms could contribute to a healthy and sustainable future. Syed Ashfaq Ahmed, the university’s pro-vice-chancellor and dean of the Faculty of Science, presided over the programme. BSc and MSc biotechnology students prepared models demonstrating practical applications.

The exhibits included recombinant insulin production using E. coli, bacteriocin-producing bacteria, microbiomes, microbial fuel cells, plastic-degrading bacteria and microbial wastewater treatment. Asma Farheen of the Department of Microbiology at Gulbarga University judged the model-making competition.
