Kerala Governor tells IIIT Kottayam graduates to control technology, not be controlled by it

Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar urged IIIT Kottayam students to use technology, including artificial intelligence, responsibly and to preserve education quality as the institute expands. Degrees were awarded to 386 BTech students, 84 MTech students and eight research scholars at the institute’s eighth convocation.
Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has urged students of the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Kottayam, to become masters of technology and use it responsibly as emerging tools, including artificial intelligence, expand. Addressing the institute’s eighth convocation at Valavoor on Saturday, Mr. Arlekar said technology should remain an instrument of human progress rather than control its users.
He said students should respond to concerns about advanced technologies by developing the ability to understand and master them. “We should utilise technology, and a situation where technology starts using us must not arise,” he said. His comments came amid wider concerns cited in the report about the effect of advanced technologies on the next generation.
The Governor also called for education quality to rise alongside the institute’s growth. He said the student population had increased from 33 to more than 450 and that the expansion of facilities should be matched by academic standards. Mr.
Arlekar proposed the idea of “Youth Social Responsibility”, modelled on corporate social responsibility. He said young people had a duty to give back to the society that provided them with education and knowledge, and linked their contribution to the vision of a developed India. Institute authorities said degrees were awarded to 386 BTech students, including 41 who completed the honours programme, along with 84 MTech students and eight research scholars who completed their PhDs.
Certificates of merit went to 55 students for academic excellence. IIIT Kottayam was recently selected among global winners of the World Health Organization’s Health and Heritage Innovations open call for an Ayurveda-related technology innovation, according to the report. The institute is also working with AIIMS New Delhi on an artificial-intelligence model for early detection of tumours on the ocular surface and eyelids using smartphone images.
An ISRO-supported project at the institute is developing Digital Twin technology to monitor astronauts’ health during space missions.
