Lagos receives 20 CNG buses for public transport expansion
Lagos State has taken delivery of 20 additional compressed natural gas buses under the federal CNG and electric vehicle initiative. Officials say the vehicles will be assigned to selected corridors, adding capacity and supporting cleaner transport, while operators were urged to maintain them properly and use them efficiently.
Lagos State has received 20 additional high-capacity compressed natural gas buses under the Presidential Initiative on CNG and Electric Vehicle Buses. The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority announced the handover on Wednesday, saying the vehicles would expand public transport capacity and support the shift towards cleaner energy. Transportation Commissioner Oluwaseun Osiyemi said the buses would improve services on the routes where they are deployed.
He thanked President Bola Tinubu for the initiative and requested further federal support, including more buses and infrastructure for their operation and maintenance. LAMATA managing director Abimbola Akinajo said the buses would be assigned to selected corridors. She said Lagos currently had about 150 CNG buses, including 36 allocated to operators under LAMATA’s regulatory framework.
Akinajo urged beneficiary operators to maintain the vehicles and deploy them efficiently. Tosin Coker, chief operations officer of Pi-CNG&EV, also called on operators to ensure proper maintenance. The latest delivery comes amid a shortage of public transport buses in Lagos.
LAMATA said in March 2025 that the state needed about 15,000 buses to move passengers effectively, while its operational fleet was slightly above 1,000. Osiyemi urged private investors to consider fleet financing and leasing, CNG infrastructure, electric-vehicle charging, maintenance, ticketing, technology and fleet management. Lagos is also restructuring its bus system through the Bus Industry Transition Programme, under an agreement involving the state, LAMATA, transport unions and operators.
