Muslim Youth League stages Malappuram marches against electoral-roll revision

The Muslim Youth League (MYL) has organised protest marches at several locations in Malappuram against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The demonstrations began on Friday, September 25, according to the organisation. In Kottakkal, thousands of MYL workers marched from Chenkuvetty to the Kottakkal bus stand.
The rally was led by MYL State committee member K.M. Khaleel and inaugurated by Indian Union Muslim League district secretary K.M. Gafoor.
Mr. Khaleel accused the Chief Election Commissioner of weakening the electoral process through the SIR. He said the organisation would continue to raise its voice against what it regarded as threats to the electoral system.
Mr. Khaleel also linked the protest to other public issues, including E20 petrol and charges on online payments. He said the dispute was not merely about the preparation of electoral rolls, but concerned people’s right to participate in a democracy.
He added that protests would continue until concerns over the revision were addressed. The MYL’s Malappuram Assembly constituency committee held a separate protest against Mr. Kumar.
Welfare Party members also staged demonstrations in Malappuram, similarly seeking the Chief Election Commissioner’s resignation and alleging that the SIR had undermined the electoral system.
