NDLEA warns against accepting parcels after drugs found in energy-drink bottle

Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has warned commercial drivers and members of the public not to transport parcels whose contents they cannot verify. The warning followed the detention of a bus driver after cocaine and methamphetamine were allegedly discovered inside a bottle presented to him as an energy drink.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has warned commercial drivers and the public against conveying parcels whose contents they do not know after illicit drugs were allegedly found inside an energy-drink bottle. Femi Babafemi, the agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, said the driver received a bottle of Fearless energy drink in Lagos as a waybill package for delivery to Ondo State. According to Babafemi, the driver believed the parcel contained an energy drink.
NDLEA operatives, however, discovered substances identified as cocaine and methamphetamine concealed inside the bottle. Babafemi said the driver spent time in custody and could have faced imprisonment. He said the person who handed over the package was traced and arrested, which prevented the driver from being charged in the matter.
In a post on X, Babafemi said possession could make a person culpable even when the person did not know what a parcel contained. He urged drivers and other people involved in delivery services to verify packages before accepting them. “Please avoid taking parcels you don’t know its content because possession makes you culpable, that’s the law,” he said.
The NDLEA spokesman also referred to the arrest of a 25-year-old businessman, Lovely Chukwulobelu, at Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu. PUNCH reported that he was allegedly attempting to traffic 72 wraps of cocaine to Portugal and had said drug trafficking was linked to expenses incurred during his wedding.
