Nigeria approves ranked textbook list for schools through 2028

Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Education has released the final ranked and approved list of textbooks for use in schools from 2026 to 2028. The first phase covers textbooks for Primary 1, Primary 4, Junior Secondary School 1 and Senior Secondary School 1. The ministry said each approved title carries a unique Ranking/QR Tracking Code.

The code is accompanied by details including the title, author or authors, publisher and year of publication. The ministry said the system would help identify and monitor approved instructional materials and improve accountability in their selection, procurement and use. The list was released after the first phase of a national textbook ranking exercise.

The ministry said the process of generating and assigning the codes contributed to the time required to validate and complete the approved list. The exercise is being conducted in phases. The second phase will cover Primary 2, Primary 5, JSS 2 and SS 2, with the same identification and tracking measures applied to the titles approved in that round.

The ministry urged publishers, schools, education authorities and procurement agencies to consult and follow the official list when selecting or buying textbooks for the affected classes. It said the exercise was intended to ensure that learners and teachers received quality, relevant and curriculum-aligned materials while strengthening transparency in textbook provision. The complete list, including the tracking codes, was made available through a ministry-designated link.
