At least 20 people were killed in a road accident at Hawan Kibo in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State on Friday, the Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed. The crash occurred at about 5pm along the Hawan Kibo bend, an area where the incident caused panic among residents and other road users. FRSC officials were sent to the scene to begin rescue operations.
The agency’s Plateau Sector Commander, Corps Commander Adelaja Ogungbemi, confirmed the death toll in a telephone interview with The PUNCH. He said many injured people had been evacuated to hospitals while others were still being taken for treatment. Ogungbemi attributed the accident to brake failure.
He advised motorists to inspect their vehicles before travelling and to exercise particular care when negotiating bends. An eyewitness, Moses Gyang, said the vehicle lost control while descending a hill. He described the scene as chaotic, with people calling for help after the crash.
Another eyewitness said rescue workers arrived quickly but faced difficulties because of the crowd that gathered. The witness said several people were already dead when the evacuation began. FRSC officers remained at the scene as rescue operations continued.
