Ugo Ferdinand Ukwueze has begun a second term as chairman of Igbo-Eze South Local Government Council in Enugu State, thanking residents for renewing his mandate and promising to broaden development efforts. Mr Ukwueze was among 17 local council chairmen sworn in by Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah after the ruling All Progressives Congress won all 17 chairmanship positions and 260 councillorship seats in the election held on Saturday, 26 September. In a Facebook post after his inauguration, Mr Ukwueze described the mandate as an honour and a responsibility to the people.
He said the renewed confidence required his administration to deepen its commitment to public welfare and make government more responsive to community needs. The chairman thanked Governor Mbah for his support and said Igbo-Eze South would continue to align its work with the state government’s priorities. Those priorities, as described in the post, include infrastructure, human-capital development, innovation, economic growth, education and public-health delivery.
Mr Ukwueze said young people would remain central to his plans. He promised continued support for skills development, entrepreneurship and digital empowerment, including efforts to help residents engage with technology, digital enterprise and artificial intelligence. Education would also remain a key focus, he said.
The council would seek to complement state interventions and ensure that children who should be in classrooms were not left on the streets during school hours. The chairman renewed commitments to security and public welfare, rural-road maintenance, rehabilitation of existing water facilities and additional infrastructure where needed. He also referred to plans involving sports, the environment, healthcare and agriculture.
Mr Ukwueze said development could not be achieved by government alone. He acknowledged that communities still needed roads, infrastructure, opportunities for young people and better access to markets for farmers, and called for cooperation between government and residents during his second term.
