Sowore returns to Nigeria to continue 2027 presidential campaign

Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress candidate for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, returned to the country from the United States on Sunday and said he would resume his campaign. In a statement to journalists, Sowore said he was pleased to return to his family and Nigeria. He said he had travelled to the United States after what he described as arrests, detention, travel restrictions and the seizure of his international passport by Nigerian security agencies.

During the trip, he said, he met Nigerians in the diaspora, supporters, activists and other stakeholders to discuss the country’s condition and his political agenda. He also said he took part in a solidarity march for Palestine in New York. Sowore said he continued advocating voting rights for Nigerians living abroad.

He pledged that an AAC administration would pursue diaspora voting if elected in 2027 and said Nigerians outside the country should participate in the democratic process. The candidate said he was expected to arrive at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos before travelling to Abuja. He also said he would continue attending court proceedings connected to a cybercrime case brought against him by the State Security Services in 2025.

Sowore described his return as the beginning of another phase of his nationwide campaign. He said he intended to engage workers, students, young people, women, farmers, traders, professionals and communities. According to the statement, those engagements will focus on equal rights, justice, peace, security and economic development, as well as the wider political, social and economic issues in the AAC’s 2027 agenda.

Sowore said the election would give Nigerians an opportunity to determine the country’s political direction. He said his campaign would continue to promote what he called fundamental political, social and economic transformation, while taking its message directly to voters.
