Nasarawa opens Akwanga bypass as governor unveils road projects

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has inaugurated a 5.2-kilometre bypass linking Akwanga with the Jos route, describing the project as a measure to reduce congestion and support economic activity in the area. The inauguration took place in Akwanga Local Government Area on Saturday. The governor also opened one-kilometre roads in Akwanga, Nasarawa-Eggon and Wamba local government areas, built by the respective councils.
Sule said the bypass would provide an alternative to the route through the centre of Akwanga, where vehicles travelling towards Jos had contributed to traffic congestion and accidents. He said the road had reduced the journey for travellers coming from Keffi or Gudi to Jos by more than 5km and would help preserve existing township roads. The governor said the road was constructed to the same standard as the federal highway so it could carry heavy-duty vehicles.
He also promised that solar-powered street lights would be installed to improve safety for motorists at night. Sule said his administration would continue its urban and rural road programme across Nasarawa’s 13 local government areas. Works Commissioner Yakuba Kwanta said the bypass could encourage new settlements and commercial activity along the corridor.
The traditional ruler known as the Chun Mada, Samson Gamu-Yare, said the road would ease the difficulties faced by motorists and residents. He described Akwanga as a gateway to the North-East and Plateau and said the project would bring development closer to local communities. The road openings formed part of activities marking the 30th anniversary of Nasarawa State’s creation.
Deputy Governor Emmanuel Akabe said the programme would include religious services, further project inaugurations, visits to correctional facilities, a football match involving Plateau and Nasarawa, and an awards ceremony. Local government chairmen Sadiyanu Isa-Andaha, Ilita Aliyu and Ezekiel Jaga thanked the governor for what they described as autonomy for councils and pledged to undertake more grassroots projects.
