Kano suspends Durbar processions over security concerns

The Kano State Government has suspended all Durbar processions and horse-riding activities within the Kano metropolis until further notice, citing concerns about public safety. The restriction was announced on Sunday in a statement by Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the Director-General of Media and Publicity at the Government House. The statement followed an emergency meeting of the State Security Council.

According to the government, the council reviewed the security situation surrounding the planned activities and adopted precautionary measures to prevent possible confrontation, protect lives and property, and preserve public order. The statement said security assessments had indicated “significant mobilisation” of supporters linked to the planned events. Officials feared that the mobilisation could lead to clashes and a breakdown of law and order.

The government directed all relevant security agencies in the state to enforce the suspension. It said lawful action should be taken against anyone who breached the directive or engaged in conduct capable of threatening public peace and security. Durbar processions are traditional ceremonial parades involving emirs, traditional rulers, horse riders and dignitaries, often held during festivals or significant state occasions.
