Thiruvananthapuram to host three-day wildlife conservation forum

The Coexistence Collective and Kerala’s State Central Library will hold a three-day ‘Vana Spandanam’ programme in Thiruvananthapuram from October 5 to 7 for Wildlife Week. The event will examine threats to wildlife, conservation and coexistence, the media’s role, photography and videography, and the future of conservation laws.
A three-day event examining wildlife conservation and coexistence will open in Thiruvananthapuram on October 5 as part of Wildlife Week celebrations. The programme, titled ‘Vana Spandanam’, is being organised by the Coexistence Collective, Kerala, and the State Central Library. It will run until October 7, with sessions at the State Central Library hall and an accompanying photograph exhibition.
Rajesh Ravindran, Principal Chief Forest Conservator and Head of Forest Force, will inaugurate the event at 10 a.m. on October 5, organisers said at a press conference. The sessions will address the status of wildlife in Kerala and rising threats in a period of growing intolerance.
Other discussions will consider why conservation should embrace coexistence, the role of the media, and the use of wildlife photography and videography as tools for conserving forests and wildlife. The programme will also include an open forum on the importance of building networks within the conservation community. The organisers said the event is intended to provide a platform for discussion among people working on or interested in wildlife protection.
Forest Minister Shibu Baby John will deliver the keynote address at a session on Tuesday at 2 p.m. The session, titled ‘Waning protection: Diluting conservation laws and the future of wildlife’, will be chaired by former Indian Forest Service officer Prakriti Srivastava. Ritwick Dutta, founder and managing trustee of the Legal Initiative for Forest and Environment, will be the lead speaker at that session.
