Tinubu extends 2025 budget implementation to December 2026

President Bola Tinubu has signed the Appropriation (Amendment) (No. 4) Bill, 2025, into law, extending the implementation period of the 2025 budget to December 31, 2026. The amendment changes the original deadline from September 30, 2026.

The development was announced in a statement by the President’s media aide, Bayo Onanuga, on Wednesday. The National Assembly passed the amendment on Tuesday, September 29, 2026. The Senate and the House of Representatives approved the measure before it was sent to the President for assent.

According to Onanuga’s statement, the extension will give ministries, departments and agencies more time to complete ongoing capital projects. It will also allow funds that have already been appropriated to be fully used for programmes intended to benefit Nigerians. The statement said the extension would prevent disruption to critical programmes.

It did not provide details of the projects affected, the amount involved or the sectors expected to receive additional implementation time. Tinubu commended the leadership and members of the National Assembly for what he described as their prompt consideration of the bill. He said the action demonstrated cooperation between the executive and legislative branches in the service of the country.
