About 35,000 expected for Great Scottish Run in Glasgow

Organisers expect around 35,000 adults and children to participate in this year’s Great Scottish Run weekend in Glasgow. Junior events returned on Saturday after weather-related cancellations last year, while Sunday’s programme features 10k and half-marathon races beginning in the city centre.
About 35,000 adults and children are expected to take part in this year’s Great Scottish Run in Glasgow, according to organisers. The weekend programme began on Saturday with the return of events for junior runners and toddlers. Those races were cancelled last year because of concerns linked to Storm Amy.
More than 2,000 young runners took part in the AJ Bell Junior and Mini Great Scottish Run on Glasgow Green. Television Gladiators Athena and Hammer were the official starters, while Scotland’s 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Eilish McColgan joined the children at the start line. Athena said the young runners had shown strong energy and deserved to be proud of their efforts.
McColgan, a four-time Olympian, said early experiences at events such as the Great Scottish Run could inspire children to continue running. Sunday’s programme includes a 10k and a half marathon. McColgan and charity fundraiser Craig Ferguson are the official starters.
Elite wheelchair competitors begin the 10k proceedings, followed by three colour-coded waves of runners between 08:30 and 09:03. The half marathon begins later, with its elite wave scheduled for 10:10 and the final wave at 12:13. Both races start on St Vincent Street and finish at Glasgow Green.
The 10k follows a mainly urban route through central Glasgow, taking in four bridges and a riverside section. The half marathon crosses the River Clyde and continues towards Bellahouston and Pollok Country Park before returning to the city centre. Road closures and parking restrictions are in place across parts of Glasgow for the event.
St Vincent Street, Paisley Road West and part of Argyle Street are expected to remain closed until at least the middle of the afternoon, according to the supplied material.
