Army transfers 17 Brigade to 1 Division in command restructuring

The Nigerian Army has moved 17 Brigade from 8 Division to 1 Division as part of a wider expansion from eight divisions to 12. Army commanders say the realignment is intended to improve command coordination and the military’s response to security threats, particularly in the North-West.
The Nigerian Army has transferred 17 Brigade from 8 Division to 1 Division in a restructuring exercise intended to strengthen command and improve operational effectiveness. The transfer, approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was formally completed on October 2, 2026, after activities held on October 1 and 2, according to information from the Army. The move forms part of the Army’s expansion from an eight-division to a 12-division structure.
The stated aim is to improve operational coordination and strengthen the response to emerging security threats, particularly in the North-West. Major General Abubakar Saddique Muhammed Wase, the General Officer Commanding 1 Division and Commander of Sector 1 Joint Task Force, North-West, said the realignment would improve the Army’s command structure and operational flow. “This realignment will optimise our command architecture, improve operational fluidity, and sharpen our response to the evolving security threats in the North West,” Wase said, according to a post obtained from the Army’s X account.
During familiarisation activities, Wase visited the newly established 83 Battalion in Malumfashi and inspected construction at its permanent site in Lambun Kyauta. He said he was impressed by the troops’ operational activity and the progress of the infrastructure, while urging them to remain focused and combat-ready. The formal handover was held at Natsinta Cantonment, Katsina, where Wase and the GOC of 8 Division, Major General Bemgba Paul Koughna, completed the transfer.
Brigadier General Ishaya Ibrahim, commander of 17 Brigade, gave a history of the formation, established in 2016 and operationalised in 2018. Koughna said the brigade was entering a new phase under 1 Division while retaining its institutional identity. The ceremony included a tree planting, a wreath-laying for fallen soldiers and a flag parade.
Wase also stressed the importance of discipline and combat readiness.
