The Cockroach Janta Party has announced plans to expand its organisation in Kerala by reaching out to students and mobilising support for its national campaign against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The party’s national media lead, Vijay Reddy Mallangi, announced the plans on Sunday in Kochi. He said nearly 20,000 people in Kerala had registered through the party’s website, the highest figure recorded in any state, and that the number was comparable with Maharashtra.
Mallangi said Kerala-based members would be encouraged to participate in protests planned in Mumbai and elsewhere. The party also intends to increase activity on campuses, with four zonal coordinators contacting students and exploring the establishment of membership desks at universities. The CJP said it would raise issues specific to Kerala, including what it described as delays in distributing e-grants to Dalit and Adivasi students.
Mallangi said the party would approach student organisations across political affiliations to coordinate its campaign. He also called on the Congress-led United Democratic Front and the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Democratic Front to put aside their differences and unite over concerns relating to the Election Commission. The party’s campaign has three stated demands: the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar, an independent inquiry into matters concerning the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, and repeal of the 2023 law governing the appointment of election commissioners.
A nationwide protest is scheduled to begin in Mumbai on October 2 before spreading to other parts of the country. Mallangi said the party’s ideology was focused on protecting constitutional principles. He also alleged that the BJP’s defence of the Chief Election Commissioner showed the ruling party was controlling him.
