Ibadan council urges Oyo politicians to campaign on policies

Ajewole said campaigns should give candidates an opportunity to explain their visions and plans to voters rather than become platforms for attacking opponents.
He said political activity should centre on what candidates intended to do if elected. The council called on candidates to clearly set out their policies for addressing challenges in Oyo State and Nigeria. It specifically urged those seeking office to explain how they would improve education, healthcare, security, infrastructure, employment and the economy.
Ajewole said voters deserved to compare the records, programmes and visions of candidates instead of being subjected to abusive exchanges. He also urged political parties and campaign organisations to place the interests of the state and country above partisan considerations. The council president-general warned that inflammatory rhetoric could create unnecessary tension and distract the public from issues affecting their daily lives.
He appealed to politicians and their supporters to exercise restraint and conduct their campaigns with maturity and respect. He also asked candidates to caution media aides, social-media handlers and bloggers against attacking or ridiculing political opponents. According to him, differences between parties and candidates should not develop into character assassination or the spread of inflammatory material.
Ajewole said political disagreements should not destroy the bonds among Oyo residents because candidates and supporters would continue to live together after the elections. He called for peaceful and constructive political engagement throughout the election period.
