India’s Congress party has named nominees for three Maharashtra Legislative Council constituencies ahead of polling on October 23. The party renominated two sitting members and selected Aditi Pohare for the Amravati Teachers’ seat, while the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi said it would contest the polls.

India’s Congress party has announced candidates for three constituencies in the forthcoming Maharashtra Legislative Council elections for Teachers and Graduates. The party renominated sitting member Abhijit Wanjari for the Graduates constituency of Nagpur Division and Jayant Dinkar Asagaonkar for the Teachers constituency of Pune Division. It selected Aditi Pohare for the Teachers constituency of Amravati.

Polling for five seats—three representing Graduates constituencies and two representing Teachers constituencies—is scheduled for October 23. The deadline for filing nominations is October 6, while candidates may withdraw their nominations until October 9. The Maha Vikas Aghadi, an opposition alliance, has announced that it will contest the elections.

Its decision was taken at a meeting attended by Congress leader Naseem Khan, Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) leaders Shashikant Shinde and Harshwardhan Patil, and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader Sanjay Raut. Khan said discussions had been held over candidates for the Graduates constituencies of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Pune, as well as the Teachers constituency of Amravati. The seats currently held by NCP’s Satish Chavan in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Graduates, NCP (SP)’s Arun Lad in Pune Graduates and Shiv Sena’s Kiran Sarnaik in Amravati Teachers are due to become vacant on December 6.

The announcement sets the stage for contests involving representatives of teachers and graduates, with parties expected to complete their nominations before the October 6 deadline.
