Nigeria’s U17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, won the WAFU-B U17 Girls Cup after defeating Togo 4-0 in Sunday’s final in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire. The victory completed an unbeaten campaign in which Nigeria won all five matches, scored 17 goals and conceded two. Captain Harmony Chidi scored twice from the penalty spot in the first half to give the Flamingos control of the final.
Oluebube Umejiaku added Nigeria’s third goal in the 67th minute, before Oluwakemi Adegbuyi completed the scoring in the 90th minute. Emmanuel Ikpeme, the Nigeria Football Federation’s acting general secretary, praised the players and officials and said he believed the team could achieve further success in Morocco. He also thanked WAFU-B for staging the tournament as a preparatory event, saying the Flamingos had benefited from the competition. The team is expected to return to Nigeria on Tuesday.
