India approves ₹1,789-crore intelligent traffic system for Delhi

India’s Union Cabinet has approved an Intelligent Traffic Management System for Delhi at an estimated cost of ₹1,789.52 crore. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Wednesday that the project would enable Delhi’s existing road network to be managed using real-time traffic data, adaptive signals, automated enforcement and integrated command-and-control systems. The Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved implementation of the project by the Delhi Police.

The initiative is part of wider efforts by the central and Delhi governments to improve traffic management, transport infrastructure and urban mobility. The system will cover 42 identified traffic corridors across the national capital. It will be implemented in three phases over 24 months, followed by five years of operation and maintenance.

According to Vaishnaw, artificial-intelligence-enabled adaptive traffic signals will respond to traffic conditions, while technology-based enforcement and real-time information will aim to make journeys safer, smoother and more efficient. The integrated command-and-control system is intended to bring traffic data and management functions together.
