Kerala forest corporation opens workation facilities at Gavi and Suryanelli

The Kerala Forest Development Corporation has launched a workation programme at Gavi in Pathanamthitta and Suryanelli in Idukki, allowing professionals to work remotely while staying in forest settings. The facilities provide Internet access, work areas and accommodation, alongside opportunities for nature walks, boating, birdwatching and wildlife trails. The project was formally launched on Wednesday, according to the corporation.

The initiative followed a proposal by Forest Minister Shibu Baby John to adapt workation models used elsewhere. KFDC adopted what it described as a low-impact approach by renovating existing forest rooms rather than constructing new buildings. KFDC managing director Raju K.

Francis said the corporation had received inquiries after promoting the facilities at events including the Travel Mart in Kochi. Interest had come from creative professionals and film teams, while corporate groups were also being considered as potential users. Connectivity was a major challenge.

BSNL engineers established an aerial link between Sabarimala and Gavi, providing speeds of about 100 megabits per second at Gavi and up to 500 Mbps at Suryanelli. Backup generators are available to support remote work. The rooms include additional power outlets and discussion areas, while outdoor routers allow guests to work from verandas or lawn tents.

Meals, unlimited tea and local coffee are included. A three-night, four-day package costs ₹14,000 per room, excluding taxes. Gavi has four duplex rooms for up to eight guests, while Suryanelli has three rooms for up to six people.
