Kondotty school launches portal linking disabled people to services

A school in Kondotty, Malappuram district, has launched a website intended to help people with disabilities and their families access information, services and opportunities. Additional District Magistrate Sadiq P.O. launched the website of Chirak, a project of EMEA Higher Secondary School, on Saturday.
The platform brings together details of government welfare schemes, pensions, education and employment opportunities, rights and other services. The website explains the documents required for applications and outlines relevant procedures. It also contains a section where people with disabilities can display work in areas including art and literature.
Another section records the achievements and experiences of people with disabilities who have excelled in different fields. The platform will also publish information about Chirak’s activities, programmes, support schemes and announcements. School officials said the project was intended to improve awareness of rights and opportunities.
Disability rights advocate, motivational speaker and national-level arm-wrestling champion Amal Iqbal is the project’s brand ambassador. The initiative is supported by local councillors, government departments, community groups, school clubs, former students, the parent-teacher association, the school management and a special educator. Earlier in September, the Chirak project launched a privilege card offering discounts of up to 50% and other benefits at participating institutions, including hospitals, educational establishments, medical shops, laboratories and malls.
Project teacher coordinator K.M. Ismail said it was the first initiative of its kind to be implemented at school level in the country.
