Osun NYSC says corps member reported missing is safe

The National Youth Service Corps has confirmed that Osun corps member Adewebi Opeoluwa is safe and was seen at the organisation’s secretariat in Osogbo on Monday. The Osun NYSC made the announcement in a statement posted on Facebook on Tuesday, following reports circulating on social media about Adewebi’s whereabouts. According to the statement, Adewebi met the state coordinator, Ekeng Ita Kubiangha.

Assistant directors, vice principals and corps members from her place of primary assignment were also present, the organisation said. The NYSC said footage from the meeting showed that Adewebi was alive and safe, contrary to reports that she was missing. She serves at St James Grammar School.

Multiple reports and social media posts had said she had been missing since September 20. A missing-person notice was circulated online on September 24. Adewebi later clarified in a statement posted by NYSC360 that she had not been missing or kidnapped.

She said her mother had been unable to contact her for some days, leading her to raise an alarm that was subsequently amplified by media reports. She said she was safe, accounted for and not in danger. Adewebi apologised for the concern caused to the NYSC community, her state coordinator, her school, friends and colleagues.

She added that the initial report had been made in good faith because of her mother’s worry. The NYSC’s confirmation brought the matter to a close, with no indication in the supplied material that a criminal investigation was under way.
