The forum’s leader, Sylvanus Dashe Datong, said the existing councils across Plateau’s 17 local government areas were inaugurated on October 10, 2024, after elections held the previous day.
The candidates cited Sections 19 and 23 of the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission Law, 2024, arguing that the provisions require the commission to organise replacement elections within the relevant timeframe. They said they held their party primaries on March 11 and 12 and submitted their records to PLASIEC after the commission issued a timetable for polls initially scheduled for September 9, 2026. However, they said the commission had not announced a new date as of September 30.
The candidates rejected the suggestion that a Plateau State High Court judgment delivered on March 13 should prevent the election. They said PLASIEC was not a party to the case and noted that the judgment was under appeal. They declined to comment on the substance of the litigation.
The forum later visited PLASIEC headquarters, carrying placards and submitting a formal letter. It called for immediate steps towards a free and credible election and urged the state government to provide lawful support.
