Nigeria’s inspector-general of police has approved a petition from the family of singer Mohbad requesting a new investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. The family says the inquiry is separate from a recently dismissed court case and remains ongoing.

Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved a petition by the family of late Afrobeats singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, known as Mohbad, seeking a fresh investigation into his death, the family’s lawyer said. Oladayo Ogungbe said the petition was submitted on 14 April 2026 and received at police headquarters in Abuja on 7 May. It raised concerns about inconsistencies in the earlier investigation and called for a forensic reconstruction of the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death.

According to the lawyer, the petition was approved and sent to the Lagos State Police Command for immediate action. The family was later informed that officers from the Special Enquiry Bureau had been assigned to examine the case. The family’s representative has met the new investigators, Ogungbe said, adding that relatives have continued to follow up and cooperate with the process.

They said they would provide documents, information, witnesses and other material that could assist the inquiry. The clarification followed the Federal High Court’s dismissal on 25 September of Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/363/2026.

Ogungbe said that case was not brought by the Aloba family and was unrelated to its police petition. The family urged investigators to act independently, diligently and professionally. It said it was not seeking to prejudge the outcome or conduct a trial through the media, but wanted a transparent process capable of establishing the facts.

The family said the re-investigation was continuing and that its pursuit of justice remained ongoing.
