Tirunelveli district has extended its no-fare travel scheme for women to 67 mofussil bus services, connecting the city with neighbouring towns and workplace destinations. Officials said the wider Tirunelveli region now offers free travel to women on 1,070 buses, including city and mofussil services.

The Tirunelveli district administration in Tamil Nadu has launched an expanded no-fare bus travel scheme for women travelling on mofussil routes. District Collector Anand Mohan inaugurated the Vettri Payanam Thittam at the Vaeinthankulam new bus stand in Palayamkottai on October 2. Tirunelveli MP C.

Robert Bruce and MLA Reddiyarpatti V. Narayanan attended the launch. The Collector said women already travelled without fares on 189 city buses each day.

The scheme has now been extended to 67 mofussil services operating from Tirunelveli, benefiting women travelling to neighbouring towns and workplaces. A further 107 mofussil services arriving in Tirunelveli from Tenkasi, Nagercoil and Thoothukudi will also provide no-fare travel for women. Across the Tirunelveli region, which includes Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi and Kanniyakumari districts, the facility covers 1,070 buses: 813 city buses and 257 mofussil buses.

The services connect Tirunelveli with destinations including Tiruchendur, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Kovilpatti, Sankarankovil, Ambasamudram and Kanniyakumari. Digital displays on the front and rear windscreens are intended to help passengers identify the buses. Mohan said bus crews had been instructed to treat women passengers respectfully.

He said complaints could be made if buses skipped scheduled stops or refused to carry women commuters, adding that violations would be viewed seriously. A teacher, Shanthi, said the scheme would save her at least ₹1,000 a month on daily travel between Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli. A similar launch took place in Tenkasi, where 82 town and 151 mofussil services were included.
