Tinubu sends NDDC’s 2026 budget proposal to House for consideration

President Bola Tinubu has transmitted the Niger Delta Development Commission’s 2026 statutory budget proposal to the House of Representatives, asking lawmakers to consider and pass the plan. The request was contained in a letter dated August 20, 2026, and addressed to the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas. Tinubu said the proposal had been prepared by the Minister of Niger Delta Development in accordance with Section 121 of Nigeria’s Constitution.

According to the President, the spending plan was based on the commission’s projected revenue and expenditure. He said it was also aligned with the Federal Government’s fiscal and development policies, including the Renewed Hope Agenda. The proposal takes account of the 2024–2026 Economic Recovery Growth Plan and assumptions supporting the Federal Government’s 2026 Appropriation Act, Tinubu said.

He urged the House to give the budget prompt consideration. The President identified youth empowerment, energy and power supply, education, industrial and enterprise development, health, security and agricultural productivity as the commission’s priorities. He said the focus was intended to address longstanding development challenges and expand economic opportunities for residents of the Niger Delta.

The NDDC is responsible for formulating and implementing development projects and programmes in the oil-producing region. Its areas of intervention include roads, education, healthcare, water projects, skills acquisition, agriculture and other community initiatives. The proposal will now undergo legislative scrutiny, including consideration by relevant House committees, before lawmakers take further action on its passage.
