Two arrested in Meerut after woman alleges car attack, police say

Police in Meerut, India, arrested a man and a woman after the man’s wife alleged that they tried to run her over during a confrontation. Authorities seized the vehicle and registered a case including an attempted-murder charge, while cautioning that they had not independently confirmed every incident shown in a video circulating online.
Police in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, have arrested a man and a woman after the man’s wife alleged that they tried to run her over in a car, The Hindu reported. The incident took place on Saturday near the L-Block police outpost on Hapur Road, under Lohiyanagar police station, police said. The vehicle was seized after the arrests.
According to police, Sunita, 32, of Kazipur, saw her husband, Mayank, 36, travelling in a car with Mahi Verma, 34, and stopped them. An argument followed. Sunita alleged that Mayank then tried to drive the car over her.
She also alleged that the pair abused her, pushed her into bushes and attempted to strangle her. Police registered a case under Sections 109(1), relating to attempt to murder, and 352, relating to intentional insult intended to provoke a breach of peace, of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. A video circulating online appears to show a woman clinging to the bonnet as the car moves away.
