Family donates organs of brain-dead Kerala man
The family of 67-year-old G. Radhakrishnan Potti, who was declared brain dead after a cerebral haemorrhage, consented to donate his organs. His liver, kidneys, skin and corneas were retrieved, with recipients identified at hospitals in Kerala and a dedicated green corridor arranged for one kidney’s transport.
The family of a 67-year-old man from Kottarakkara has consented to donate his organs after he was declared brain dead at a hospital in Kerala, enabling the retrieval of several organs and tissues. G. Radhakrishnan Potti was admitted to KIMSHEALTH hospital on September 21 after suffering a cerebral haemorrhage.
Doctors declared brainstem death on Friday evening, after which his wife and daughter informed the hospital of their decision to donate. Both kidneys and the liver were harvested, along with skin and corneas. The liver and one kidney were allocated to end-stage patients receiving treatment at KIMSHEALTH hospital.
The other kidney was allocated to an end-stage renal patient at Government Medical College, Kottayam. The skin was to be stored at the skin bank at Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram. The corneas were to be harvested by the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology in Thiruvananthapuram.
Police created a dedicated green corridor for the ambulance carrying the kidney by road from Thiruvananthapuram to Government Medical College, Kottayam. The arrangement was intended to support the transfer of the organ between the hospitals. The Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation coordinated the identification of recipients and the allocation of the donated organs.
Potti was a retired Revenue Department employee who had worked at the Kollam Collectorate. The donation was the latest deceased-donor organ retrieval reported in the State.
