Four young men died and three others were injured after an electrical fault at a Ganesh festival pandal in Madhya Pradesh’s Mandla district, police said on Saturday. The incident occurred around 5 a.m. in Hirapur village, within the Nainpur police station area.
Police said eight men had been sleeping in the tent after returning from the immersion of a Ganesh idol. Mandla Superintendent of Police Rajesh Raghuvanshi said survivors reported that a short circuit developed in a music amplifier after power was restored. A live wire from the amplifier then touched a metal grill at a small temple where the pandal had been erected, causing seven people to receive electric shocks.
Earlier reports had suggested that a live wire from an electric pole fell on the tent. Raghuvanshi said the technical team of the power department was investigating and had identified the amplifier as the source of the short circuit. Any legal action will be based on the team’s report, he said.
Sub-divisional police officer Manish Raj identified the deceased as Ravi Jharia, 23, Jainu Bhanwre, 19, Krishna Kumar Bhanwre, 18, and Virendra Bhanwre, 24. Two of the injured were receiving treatment at the government hospital in Nainpur and were stable, police said. The third was referred to the district hospital in Mandla.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed grief and announced financial assistance of ₹4 lakh for each deceased person’s family. He said the district administration had been instructed to provide the aid.
